La Kantoria is a young women’s choir formed in 2005 at the Municipal Music School in Leioa in order to carry on the choral tradition consolidated by the members of the Leioa Kantika Korala youth choir.
Conducted from the start by Basilio Astúlez, the choir currently has 25 members between the ages of 16 and 23, and over these past few years La Kantoria has performed at major events and on the main stages in the Basque Country.
In 2007, it won first prize in the category of equal voices at the Antigua Abesbatzak National Competition in Zumarraga, and in 2008 it was the outright winner of the National Grand Prix for Choral Singing, also receiving first prizes in both polyphony and folklore.
In tandem with the Youth Orchestra of Leioa, over the past year and a half it has held several concerts featuring the Stabat Mater by G. B. Pergolesi and other Baroque vocal pieces by contemporary artists.
The choir combines an a capella programme with a symphonic repertoire and the showcasing of new pieces written for a female choir, paying the utmost attention to the mise-en-scène and choreography.
